How can an existing heat supply be rerouted when railway tracks block the direct path? This was exactly the challenge on the premises of Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) in Berlin, Germany.
As part of planned new construction projects, two existing workshop buildings are being dismantled. Heat supply lines currently run through these buildings and supply two additional workshop buildings. To ensure that their heat supply remains secure after the dismantling, the pipeline routes had to be redesigned.
Conventional installation in an open trench was not possible because of the existing railway tracks and restricted space. The solution was to use two approximately 160-metre-long FLEXWELL-FHK 200/310 pipelines from BRUGG Pipes. They were routed beneath the existing railway tracks using horizontal directional drilling.
Both pipelines have now been successfully pulled into place. The next project step will involve installing the end connections and two T-branches. The new pipelines can then be integrated into the existing heat supply system.
