From beach to heat source - CALPEX PUR-KING for thalassothermal project in France

Where previously drainage pipes under the sand of Les Sables d'Olonne only drained seawater, a modern district heating network is now being created that generates clean energy from the power of the ocean.

For this pioneering district heating project, we supplied six 205 metre CALPEX PUR-KING drums, which were transported directly from Kleindöttingen to the French coast by special transport. Each drum weighed 910 kg and was 3.8 metres high. A total of 1,230 metres of the ultra-modern pipe system are now being used.

The highlight of the project: the district heating network is based on a 25-year-old drainage system that was originally used to stabilise the beach. It has now been further developed and serves as the basis for an environmentally friendly energy supply.

The CALPEX PUR-KING pipes are being used in this innovative project, which is based on thalassothermal energy - the use of seawater as an energy source that generates heating energy via heat pumps. The result is a local, renewable district heating solution that supplies dozens of buildings with environmentally friendly heat.

CALPEX PUR-KING is impressive in several respects:

  • Minimal heat loss, confirmed by seven consecutive test wins at the Danish Technological Institute (DTI)
  • Long individual lengths enable economical, fast installation with minimal interfaces
  • Customised branch pieces for flexible network architecture

This project impressively demonstrates how existing infrastructures can be transformed into the energy future using modern technology.
