Three different pipe systems for an efficient district heating network in Chemnitz/Germany

With FLEXWELL-FHK, PREMANT and SPIRAMANT, BRUGG Pipes implemented in Chemnitz a high-performance solution for the expansion of the urban heating and cooling network – efficient, sustainable and future-proof.

As part of route C, three pipe systems from BRUGG Pipes were used in Chemnitz. The works were carried out in 2025 for the customer Inetz Chemnitz and were part of a comprehensive infrastructure project for the modernisation of district heating supply.

A key element was the trenchless crossing of the heavily trafficked federal road B95. Here, two 105-metre-long FLEXWELL-FHK district heating cables with dimension 200/310 were installed using the relining method. This construction method enabled a fast and traffic-friendly implementation in a particularly sensitive area.

Additionally, approx. 1,400 metres of PREMANT plastic jacket pipes in dimensions DN300/500 and DN150/280 were installed. They served as main and distribution routes and ensured reliable integration into the existing network. Parts of the DN300/500 route were also implemented as an above-ground protective pipe installation.

For the parallel base route, an additional 510 metres of SPIRAMANT spiral-wound pipe DN300/450 were used, specifically designed for a cooling line with an AlMg3 jacket. Ball valves in DN300 and DN150 as well as KMR fixed points with specially manufactured anchor plates complemented the secure network integration.

The combination of the three pipe systems enabled a robust, efficient and durable solution for heating and cooling supply in Chemnitz and demonstrated the advantages of an integrated system approach in district heating expansion.
