Three pipe systems for a district heating network in Chemnitz, Germany

With FLEXWELL-FHK, PREMANT and SPIRAMANT , BRUGG Pipes implemented a high-performance solution in Chemnitz for the expansion of the city's heating and cooling network – efficient, reliable and tailored to the project requirements.

Three BRUGG Pipes pipe systems were used for the Trasse C project in Chemnitz. The work was carried out in 2025 for the customer Inetz Chemnitz and formed part of a major infrastructure project to modernise the district heating supply.

A key element was the trenchless crossing beneath the busy B95 federal highway. Two FLEXWELL-FHK district heating pipes , each 105 metres long and measuring 200/310, were pulled into place using the relining method. This construction method enabled rapid installation with minimal disruption to traffic in a particularly sensitive area.

In addition, approximately 1,400 metres of PREMANT plastic-jacketed pipes in dimensions DN300/500 and DN150/280 were installed. They serve as the main and distribution lines, ensuring reliable integration into the existing network. Sections of the DN300/500 route were also installed by pulling the pipes into an above-ground protective casing.

For the parallel pipe route on supports, a further 510 metres of SPIRAMANT spiral-seam pipes in dimension DN300/450 were used, specifically designed for a cooling line with an AlMg3 jacket. Ball valves in DN300 and DN150, together with fixed points for bonded pre-insulated pipes featuring specially manufactured anchor plates, completed the secure network integration.

Combining the three pipe systems provided a robust, durable solution for heating and cooling supply in Chemnitz and demonstrated the benefits of an integrated systems approach to district heating expansion.
