District heating line crosses beneath road and school grounds

In Sondershausen, Germany, Europe, a new district heating connection was installed in the area of Frankenhäuser Straße. The particular challenge: a fully renovated road and the grounds of the Östertalschule school had to be crossed beneath without opening up the surfaces along the entire route.

For this demanding section, Stadtwerke Sondershausen GmbH used the flexible steel-cased FLEXWELL-FHK 200/310 pipe system from BRUGG Pipes. A continuous pipe section of approximately 738 ft was installed and pulled into the prepared route largely using trenchless installation.

The length of the pipe section also placed particular demands on transportation and construction site logistics. A suitable transshipment area first had to be defined for the delivery and handling of the large pipe reel. From there, the pipe was transported to the launch pit using appropriate pulling equipment and then pulled into the route.

The trenchless installation made it possible to avoid extensive interventions in the already renovated Frankenhäuser Straße and the adjacent school grounds. In addition to supplying the pipe system, BRUGG Pipes also supported the organization and execution of the installation.

The project was completed in calendar week 33 of 2026. Plastic-jacketed pipes were also used along the further course of the district heating connection, allowing the different requirements of the individual route sections to be addressed with suitable pipe systems.
